Deryk King has been President and Chief Executive Officer of Centrica North America since January 2001. He is also Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Centrica’s major North American subsidiary Direct Energy and a member of Centrica’s Group Executive Committee.

Deryk spent his early career in sales and marketing, first with Air Products and subsequently with ICI. In a 23-year career with ICI, he held a number of international marketing posts including two and a half years stationed in Tokyo. Deryk then moved into general management, first as general manager of ICI’s European fertilizer business and then as managing director of ICI’s global polyester business.

He left ICI in 1996 to become chief operating officer of Powergen plc. During his time with Powergen, the company expanded its operations into India, Indonesia, Thailand, Hungary, Portugal and Australia.

After leaving Powergen in late 1998, Deryk joined Centrica plc in 1999 as senior advisor and projects director for a number of European initiatives the company was undertaking. He joined the company on a permanent basis in August 2000 and moved into his present post at the end of that year.

Prior to relocating to Toronto, Deryk was a non-executive director of Ellis & Everard plc and Kvaerner ASA, and Chairman of the National Lottery Charities Board (NLCB) West Midlands region. He is currently a Trustee Director of the Consumers’ Waterheater Income Fund and was a non-executive Director of Allstream Inc (formerly AT&T Canada) until its merger in 2004 with Manitoba Telecom Services.

Deryk is a graduate of Oxford University and has also completed the INSEAD Advanced Management Programme and the Cabinet Office Top Management Programme. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.
