By anyone’s standards, we’ve accomplished a lot in 6 years. We’ve grown to become a C$7.8 billion (US$6.4 billion) organization with more than 5 million customer relationships throughout the U.S. and Canada. That makes Direct Energy North America's largest integrated non-utility energy and services provider.

Here’s a glance at the history of our growth. As for us, we’re focused on what we’ll achieve for our customers in the future.

Our Milestones

2000

UK-based Centrica acquires Direct Energy to enter the North American market and then acquires Energy America to bring deregulated retail energy services to the United States.

2002

Centrica North America purchases Enbridge Services, an Ontario-based company that provides energy-related products and services – the first step toward becoming a total energy solutions provider.

2003

Direct Energy Essential Home Services launches in Ontario. Direct Energy Business Services launches across Canada and Texas.

2004

Direct Energy gains 980,000 Alberta gas and electricity customers from ATCO and acquires Calgary-based Quintana Minerals Resources. We also acquire two power-generation facilities – Bastrop Energy Center and Frontera Energy Center, both in Texas.

From there, we launch Home Services in Alberta and acquire Residential Services Group, extending our Home Services footprint to 11 U.S. states.

2005

To expand our Home Services offering in Ontario and Alberta, we acquire a number of plumbing companies and begin adding this service to the mix.

2006

Direct Energy continues our U.S. growth, acquiring a power station in Paris, Texas, as well as the electricity customers of Entergy Solutions Ltd. in Texas. We also begin supplying electricity to New York customers.

And, we’re still making history today.
