Bringing Clarity to Natural Gas Rebates

The Alberta government recently made public the revised details for the Natural Gas Rebate Program for Alberta businesses. The revised program provides rebates when the monthly winter prices (November until March) of natural gas for two of the three regulated suppliers exceed $5.50/GJ

If customers are on a natural gas contract with us, the rebate may serve to reduce the cost of natural gas causing the difference in cost between the contracted rate and the regulated rate to widen significantly.

How it Works

In order for rebates to be issued, the monthly natural gas costs charged by two of the three regulated suppliers in Alberta must exceed the threshold of $5.50/GJ. The three suppliers are Direct Energy Regulated Services North, Direct Energy Regulated Services South and AltaGas, and as soon as two of them charge a price greater than the threshold, the rebate program comes into effect.

The rebate schedule, during the winter months, is as follows:

Over $5.50 up to $7.50/GJ, the rebate = $1.50/GJ
Over $7.50 up to $9.00/GJ, the rebate = $2.50/GJ
Over $9.00 up to $12.00/GJ, the rebate = $3.25/GJ
Over $12.00, the rebate = $3.25/GJ + the difference over $12.00/GJ

If you have a natural gas contract with us, and you meet the eligibility requirements (below), then the rebate can be applied to your fixed price contract. If the rebate is in effect, it will automatically be deducted from your monthly bill.

Eligibility

All commercial customers whose natural gas consumption is under 5,000 GJ/month are eligible.

Commercial customers with consumption greater than 5,000 GJ/month must apply for the rebate (on the excess).

Industrial customers are only eligible for a maximum of 5,000 GJ/month.

This includes customers who purchase their natural gas from marketers or their regulated supplier as well as customers who are on existing natural gas contracts. Eligible business customers include condominium associations, landlords, farms, municipal and community buildings, non-profit organizations and small businesses.
