Sears Canada is a multi-channel retailer with 122 department stores and 47 furniture and appliance stores.

The Challenge

Sears needed a standardized building automation system for all its retail outlets. Routine tasks, such as setting lighting and temperature levels, needed to be automated at stores across the country. Installing this complex system needed to be easy, and its maintenance simple. For this Sears wanted a company that could step up to the nationwide task from St. John’s to Victoria.

Our Solution

Direct Energy Business Services delivered Sears a fully automated system to manage light and temperature. The system is able to adjust heating, ventilation, air conditioning and lighting according to preset levels, or be modified according to needs of individual stores. The system even monitors and automatically adjusts the level of carbon dioxide in a store based on the number of shoppers, bringing in more fresh air when needed. Through this easy-to-use, automated system, we brought Sears a solution to improve the shopping experience within their stores, and make nationwide energy management effortless.

Results

Sears Canada saves on energy costs by employing our convenient automated system. By implementing a standardized energy solution across Canada, the retailer has also saved time and money on training costs. The system’s ability to regulate temperature and lighting on a timed basis and to adapt to changes and special needs has made energy management easy and consistent. Even in worst-case scenarios, like the 2003 blackout, Sears quickly adapted to the needs of conservation while preserving emergency lighting—all from a fully automated, central location.
