How Central Heating Works

Natural Gas Forced-Air

A natural gas forced-air furnace draws air inside a heat exchanger where it is warmed by burning natural gas. The resulting heat energy is transferred to room air, which is then blown by the fan into your duct system to heat your home.

A forced-air furnace is the most advantageous because it:

  • Provides heat quickly and easily, distributing warm air to all rooms in your home
  • Can centrally filter and humidify air, when equipped with the right accessories
  • Is a cost-efficient way to heat your home
  • Can easily accommodate the installation of central air conditioning

Replacing an older furnace with a new mid-efficiency or high-efficiency natural gas furnace offer substantial cost benefits, which can help you to save money when you heat your home. Learn more about furnaces from facts & tips.

Radiator Boilers

Hydronic heating systems (natural gas, oil or propane) use a boiler to heat water, and are commonly found in older homes. Remember warming up your mitts at your grandmother’s house? The hot water is circulated to radiators throughout the house before returning to the boiler to be reheated. We can help you realize energy savings by replacing an older system with a newer model.

Electric Baseboards

Homes heated with electric baseboards most likely have high heating bills. In many cases, the cost of converting to a forced-air furnace, including a central duct system, can be paid for over time with the energy savings provided by a mid-efficiency or high-effeciency natural gas furnace. Plus, having ductwork in place makes it easier to install central air conditioning.

Natural Gas Fireplace

Natural gas fireplaces offer the benefit of heating specific zones of your home on an as-needed basis. You can turn down your furnace and stay warm in the rooms you use most. Plus, natural gas fireplaces, as a secondary source of heat in the family or living room, create a welcoming ambiance.

Remember, for safety and efficiency, be sure to perform regular fireplace maintenance.
