Direct Energy Gives Texas Children’s Hospital Heroes Tickets to the Big Game

On January 31st, Direct Energy presented five Texas Children’s Hospital nurses with the chance of a lifetime to go to Super Sunday, which was held in Houston on Sunday, February 5th. The five nurses were selected from the nearly 3,000 that work at Texas Children’s, and were among the recipients of the hospital’s 2016 Nursing Excellence Awards. Each hero received two tickets so they could bring a guest to the big game.

Manu Asthana and four Direct Energy employees attended a pep rally held at the Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women. Equipped with pompoms and dressed in Direct Energy orange, the team was able to interact with each of the recipients to personally thank them for making a difference in the lives of children from Houston and around the globe.

The heroes who were honored were: Leah Garza, Amy Aaronson, Evelyn Barren, Christopher Sturrock and Colleen Brand.

Leah Garza, who was named Nurse of the Year, has been instrumental and impactful in the improvement of patient care outcomes in the Cancer Center inpatient unit. Chosen as Rookie of the Year, Amy Aaronson is a recent graduate of the nurse residency program and is a staff nurse in Texas Children’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Evelyn Barren was named Preceptor of the Year and serves as co-chair of the PICU Education Committee where she helps to organize, develop and lead education initiatives for all providers in the PICU. Christopher Sturrock was selected as Certified Nurse of the Year and works in the Heart Center. The final recipient was Colleen Brand, winner of Advanced Practice Nurse of the Year. With more than 40 years of neonatal nursing experience, Colleen has touched thousands of lives.

Manu Asthana was interviewed by three of Houston’s top news stations – KHOU (CBS ), KPRC (NBC), KRIV-TV (Fox) and KTRK (ABC). During the interviews he served as the voice of Direct Energy and elaborated on the company’s commitment to Texas Children’s Hospital. The segment was also aired on news stations in San Antonio, Dallas, Beaumont, Temple and Spokane Washington.
