In July of 2016, Direct Energy began a partnership with MPOWERD, one that was dedicated to help bring light to those who don’t have access to reliable, safe, and affordable sources of electricity. The Luci Light, created by MPOWERD, is a solar-powered light that is inflatable and durable.
Thanks to the Give Brighter plan, Direct Energy customers received their very own Luci light in addition to a 12-month fixed-rate electricity plan and sent one abroad to people who need it most.
We are excited to announce that 10,000 Luci lights have been donated through the Give Brighter campaign. These lights have been sent to organizations and people around the world, and true to the plan’s name, we are bringing brightness to those who live in the dark after the sun goes down.
“The Give Brighter program is pioneering for our industry,” said Jayesh Shah, Direct Energy’s commercial director for Texas. “We want our customers to know that we do much more than the typical energy provider. Direct Energy’s partnership with MPOWERD highlights what our mission is and that is to make a difference in people’s lives.”
These Luci lights are sent across the world through the distribution of different nonprofits. Specifically, 1,020 of these Luci lights were distributed by In A Perfect World in Malawi. Founded by Prince‘s widow, Manuela Testolini, In A Perfect World is a charity that helps to make education more accessible for children in the developing world. These schools operate without regular access to electricity, meaning that when the sun goes down the school day ends. Thanks to Luci, these children can now study and play after the sun goes down.
Another 1,500 Luci lights will arrive in Haiti in late November 2016 with the International Medical Corps as they responded to the devastation wrought by Hurricane Matthew. This nonprofit is dedicated to meeting a range of medical needs from emergency responses to general health services. With the aid of Luci, the International Medical Corps can continue to offer these life-changing services after dark.
