The holidays are a time of food, family, and festivities – and creating memories about those things.

But what do I mean by “really” enjoy the holidays? Well, sometimes it’s important to take a step back to examine why you enjoy this time of year and then do everything we can to continue enjoying them for as long as we have breathe in our lungs.

Allow me to speak from personal experience for a moment: consuming too much of a good thing (or several things) is one of the major reasons we see loved ones pass before their time. And instead of celebrating with them, we can only remember them during the holidays and wish they were here to join in with the laughs, smiles, food, family, friends, and colleagues.

Don’t misunderstand – we aren’t contemplating mortality on the eve of several weeks of celebration. Instead, it’s the complete opposite! I’m here to encourage you to take stock of your health and well-being be here this year and for many to come.

The best way to start this process is by eating better daily on a daily basis – and you can actually start during the holidays!

Why is it that homemade desserts from the holidays always seem so much tastier than nearly anything else?

I am the first to admit that I have a sweet tooth. I’m a “eat dessert first and dinner last” kind of person. However, in light of events in my family over the last couple of years, I’ve had to make big changes in the portion size on my plate in general and  the amount of sweets I eat specifically.

The result? Over the past year, I have lost 30 pounds. The motivation for that change? I realized that I wanted – needed! – to be around my family for the holidays and other important events for a very long time. And to do that, I had to make different choices. Hard choices.

A classic holiday meal with multiple generations in attendance is a treasured experience.

After witnessing the changes in my life, my family, friends, and colleagues are similarly inspired to make small changes. Not only do they believe it can work for them, they want to be around each and every year to really enjoy the holidays.

So, I am going to ask you for two favors this holiday season:

  • Look around at your next gathering of family, friends or colleagues and realize how much you really enjoy time with these people.
  • Start making small changes that will have a lasting impact on your health and the people in your life.

Consider these small changes:

Yes, that turkey WAS tasty, but you don’t need two plates of it. Bring some home for leftovers instead.
  • Smile more
  • Brighten someone else’s day with your positive attitude and temperament
  • Hug more
  • Eat less. Specifically, reduce your portion amount, cut back on the sweets, and eat only 1 plate of food.
  • Eat more fruit
  • Drink more water

I want to make sure you REALLY enjoy the holidays this year and for years to come!  And be on the lookout in late December for a fresh take on the goals you can set for your New Year’s Resolutions.

Do you have any suggestions on small changes you can make that can have big impacts on your long-term health and well-being (especially during the holidays)? Share with us in the comments!
