Get outside and grill!

One way to save on your electric bill this summer is to step out of your kitchen and cook outside.  Grilling outside reduces the need to use your oven, which can be costly because your cooling system has to work harder to cool the entire house with that source of heat going.  In the evenings, as the sun starts to set and the outside temperature starts to drop, the weather is perfect for a family barbeque and we’ve got some helpful tips and a tasty recipe to help you save money on your electric bill and ensure a successful barbeque.

  1. Defrost. Place meat in the refrigerator the night before rather than using the microwave to defrost.
  2. Keep the hood closed. When you’re grilling, you can save energy and cook time by keeping your grill’s lid closed.
  3. Reheat. After you’ve cooked your meat through, use the grill to warm buns, reheat side dishes or bake dessert.
  4. Cooling. Let food cool before putting leftovers in the refrigerator to keep it from having to work harder and use more energy to cool the food once it is in the refrigerator.

Applesauce Barbecue Chicken Recipe

4 Servings
Prep/Total Time: 20 min.

4 boneless skinless chicken breast halves (6 ounces each)
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 tablespoon Crisco® Olive Oil
2/3 cup chunky applesauce
2/3 cup spicy barbecue sauce
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon chili powder

Sprinkle chicken with pepper. In a large skillet, brown chicken in oil on both sides. In a small bowl, combine the remaining ingredients; pour over chicken. Cover and cook 7-10 minutes longer or until a meat thermometer reads 170°. Yield: 4 servings.
