Lets save some energy, Texas!

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) manages the flow of electric power to 23 million Texas residents. Due to record summer temperatures, they are requesting the help of all Texas residents to conserve electricity and prevent rotating outages.

“We are asking consumers and businesses to reduce their electricity use during peak electricity hours from 3 to 7 p.m.,” said Kent Saathoff, vice president of system planning and operations.

Ways you can help:

  • Turn off all unnecessary lights, appliances and electronic equipment.
  • When at home, close blinds and drapes that let in direct sun, set air conditioning thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, and use fans in occupied rooms to feel cooler.
  • When away from home, set air conditioning thermostats to 85 degrees and turn all fans off before you leave. Block the sun by closing blinds or drapes on windows that will get direct sun.
  • Do not use your dishwasher, laundry equipment, hair dryers, coffee makers, or other home appliances during the peak hours of 3 to 7 p.m.
  • Set your pool pump to run in the early morning or evening instead of the afternoon.

As an added incentive to conserve energy, Centerpoint and Oncor customers who have a smart meter are eligible for the Biggest Energy Saver Consumer Contest. Participants of the contest have the chance to win the grand prize of an electric vehicle, a first place prize of a full kitchen suite of GE Profile smart appliances enabled with Brillion™ technology, or a second-place prize of a GE Profile Front Load washer/electric dryer pair enabled with Brillion™ technology.
