Neighbors are what make a collection of houses into a community. They’re whom you borrow from when all you have is a half of a cup of sugar but your recipe calls for more. They lent you their lawn mower when yours was out of fuel and the grass was nearing knee high. They drove the after-school carpool when you needed to work late last week. Neighbors helping neighbors is a beautiful notion and our Direct Energy customers in Texas are putting that notion into action with the Neighbor-to-Neighbor program.
The Neighbor-to-Neighbor program allows customers to contribute to a bill-assistance program to help out their neighbors who are facing financial hardships and difficulty paying their electricity bill.
When Gracie and her six children were burdened with an unexpected move, Gracie did everything in her power to make ends meet.
“My saving grace was the Neighbor-to-Neighbor program,” said Gracie. “It kept me from taking out a loan against my truck, which was all I had to drive the kids to school and back.”
Direct Energy understands that emergencies can arise unexpectedly and they can cause a financial strain on our customers. Because of this, we encourage our customers, who are able, to be neighborly and donate to the Neighbor-to-Neighbor bill-assistance program.
Through a local community-action agency, those who qualify for the Neighbor-to-Neighbor program can receive up to $600 in assistance during a calendar year. Direct Energy, along with Centrica, has donated more than $4 million since 2003 to the Neighbor-to-Neighbor program. Funds are distributed to fellow Texans and customers through 29 community-action agencies.
