People enjoy life hacks for several reasons, but we especially like ones that help us save money. Sites like DealNews and Lifehacker provide great money-saving tips on a regular basis. In particular, they’ve created a yearly timeline with the best times to purchase certain items. While such a list is helpful, also collected specific items you shouldn’t purchase in a given month. Thus, here’s the August installment of our monthly series on what NOT to buy!
August is the month for all things related to back-to-school. Since kids return to school this month, there are major deals happening on school supplies; however, it’s important to be aware of the items not priced to sell during August. Check out these items that won’t be discounted so you don’t end up overspending this month.
Fall Clothing. When retailers advertise their back-to-school sales, they are also trying to clear out all their summer clothing to make room for their fall line. If you are looking to purchase clothing, focus on buying summer items, which will be on clearance of up to 60% (or more) and refrain from buying any fall clothing as you won’t see many discounts (if any at all).
Smartphones and Tablets. While there plenty of advertisements urge consumers to upgrade their smartphone or tablet, don’t fall for it. Makers such as Apple and Android typically debut their new models in September or October, which is when you can find much better deals – especially on an older version.
Televisions. Continued from last month’s list, August is still a bad month to purchase a new television. There will be a deal or two found over the month due to back-to-school advertisements and Labor Day sales, but generally there are much better deals later in the year. The best time to buy a TV is during Black Friday sales.
Holiday travel arrangements. While it’s typically helpful to plan ahead, in financial terms it does not pay off to book holiday travel in advance. Instead, wait till September or October, which is typically when airlines offer the best prices on holiday travel. If you are looking to book a vacation, then head out for a last-minute trip in September to capture the best deals. Kids are back to school, so the travel demand is low, which yields great travel deals in September.
