As a time to remember those who have bravely served our country, Memorial Day weekend comes each year with plans for many to relax with friends and family. It can also be a time for many of us to catch up on house related chores and find time to pick up new items we may have been putting off.
Texas shoppers will get a break from state and local sales and use taxes on purchases of certain energy efficient products over the Memorial Day weekend. The 2015 ENERGY STAR sales tax holiday begins at 12:01am on Saturday, May 23 and ends at 11:59pm on Monday, May 25. Shoppers can purchase high energy usage products with the ENERGY STAR label such as air conditioners priced at $6,000 or less, ceiling fans, and dishwashers, all tax free. Other qualifying products include:
- Clothes washers
- Refrigerators priced at $2,000 or less
- Programmable thermostats
This special tax-free holiday also includes Internet and catalog sales of qualifying products, given that the item is paid for and delivered to the customer during the tax-exempt time frame. Customers can alternatively order and pay for the item, given that the retailer accepts the order, even if the item is delivered after Memorial Day weekend.
Keep in mind too that when purchasing larger items, the delivery fee counts toward the rules for the tax exemption. For example, if you purchase a refrigerator for $1,950 and delivery is $100, you won’t be eligible for the tax exemption as it places your total above $2,000.
If you’ve been putting off purchasing that new refrigerator, take advantage of this ENERGY STAR sales tax holiday special!
We wish everyone a safe and relaxing Memorial Day weekend.
