What is a Renewable Energy Credit?

A Renewable Energy Credit (REC) is a "tradeable, non-tangible energy commodity in the United States that represents proof that 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity was generated from an eligible renewable energy resource like biomass, hydro, or wind."*

When a Retail Electricity Provider (REP) like Direct Energy purchases a REC, we are offsetting 1,000 kWh of non-renewable energy resources.
