Instead, it shows how much heat the system can remove from your home. One ton equals 12,000 British thermal units (BTUs) per hour, and 1 BTU is the amount of heat needed to raise 1 pound of water by 1 degree Fahrenheit.

The estimates below can give you a general idea of what the equipment may cost. These prices cover the central AC unit only and do not include labor or other installation expenses.

How to calculate the cost of using central air

There is a simple formula for estimating how much you’re spending to cool your home. You just need to know the wattage of your air conditioner, approximately how many hours per day it runs and your price per kWh of electricity.

Here’s how to find each:

  • Air conditioner wattage – Start by checking the equipment label or nameplate. You may also find the wattage in the owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s online specifications by searching for the model number. If the wattage isn’t listed, you can call the technicians who installed the unit for information. Most central conditioners consume between 3,000 and 6,000 watts.
  • Daily operating time – Your thermostat may track how long the system runs each day. If it doesn’t, try tracking the number of minutes your air conditioner runs in 1 hour. Do this once during the hottest part of the day and again after dark. Multiply both numbers by 12, add them together, and divide by 60 for a rough estimate of the number of hours your unit runs each day.
  • Electricity rate – Finally, finding your kWh rate is easy – it’s printed on your monthly electric bill. 


Once you have those numbers, follow these steps to calculate your estimated air conditioning costs:

  1. Divide your air conditioner’s wattage by 1,000 to convert it to kilowatts.
  2. Multiply the number of kilowatts by the estimated number of hours your air conditioner runs per day. This shows roughly how many kilowatt hours (kWh) your conditioner uses per day.
  3. Multiply the kWh by the price per kWh listed on your electrical bill.
  4. Multiply the daily cost by the number of days in the billing period.


Example of calculating the cost of using central air

Here’s a simple example of how you can estimate the cost. Let’s say your central AC uses 4,000 watts, runs for about 8 hours per day and your electricity rate is $0.12 per kWh.

  1. 4,000 watts ÷ 1,000 = 4 kilowatts
  2. 4 kilowatts x 8 hours = 32 kWh per day
  3. 32 kWh x $0.12 per kWh = $3.84 per day
  4. $3.84 x 30 days = $115.20 per month


Based on this estimate, the air conditioner would cost about $3.84 per day, or $115.20 over 30 days, to run.
