Previously, Lubbock customers had little say in who powered their homes. People relied on a single utility company for electricity. Starting in 2024, Lubbock became a deregulated electricity market.
Energy deregulation or energy choice puts the power in your hands by allowing you to choose your electricity provider. Now, you aren’t stuck with limited options. You have the freedom to shop for the plans and rates that best fit your needs.
They produce electricity and sell it on the open market.

Direct Energy and your utility work together to provide electricity service for your specific area. Direct Energy is a retail electricity provider, and you can shop for your own electricity plan with providers like us to find the right rate and plan for you. Your local utility is only responsible for delivering electricity to your home, reading your electricity meter, and maintaining the poles and wires that deliver electricity.
In the event of a power outage, contact your local utility company. Their contact information is typically found on your electricity bill.
Yes! In select markets, customers can choose renewable energy plans that utilize electricity attributable to environmentally friendly energy sources like wind or solar.
Opting for a renewable energy plan helps reduce carbon emissions and supports the development of sustainable energy sources, contributing to a cleaner and greener future.
No. Switching electricity providers won't interrupt your power. Lubbock Power & Light (LP&L) will continue to deliver electricity to your home and maintain the poles and wires. Direct Energy will handle your electricity plan and billing, so service stays on throughout the switch.
No action is needed. When you switch to Direct Energy, your electricity provider automatically transitions. LP&L will still be your local utility and continue maintaining the poles and wires that deliver electricity to your home.
If you're currently under contract with another provider, your plan may include an early termination fee. Any potential charges are outlined in your Electricity Facts Label.

4 Auto Pay discount is available with qualifying plans only. You will need to enroll in Direct Energy's Auto Pay program to receive the discount on the energy charge associated with your electricity plan. This discount will be listed in your Electricity Facts Label (EFL). To be eligible for an automatic payment option, your Direct Energy account must be in good standing and you may not have two or more returned payments during the past 6-month period. If your account is eligible, the Auto Pay discount will be reflected on your monthly bill as a separate line item in next full billing cycle. The Auto Pay discount will no longer apply should you opt of the Auto Pay program for any reason.
