Energy deregulation explained

Previously, Lubbock customers had little say in who powered their homes. People relied on a single utility company for electricity. Starting in 2024, Lubbock became a deregulated electricity market.

Energy deregulation or energy choice puts the power in your hands by allowing you to choose your electricity provider. Now, you aren’t stuck with limited options. You have the freedom to shop for the plans and rates that best fit your needs.

Lubbock at a glance

From deep West Texas roots to a thriving cultural and business scene, Lubbock blends history, innovation and community pride.
  • Founded in 1890, Lubbock grew from just 50 residents to a city of nearly 296,000 people today.
  • Known as the "Hub City," Lubbock's central location makes it a key center for logistics and transportation in West Texas.
  • A longtime leader in agriculture, the area produces 2-3 million bales of cotton each year.
  • Texas Tech University, established in Lubbock in 1923, drives education, research and economic growth across the region.
  • Lubbock is the hometown of legendary musician Buddy Holly, one of rock and roll's early icons, who was born there in 1936.

What kind of energy plan is right for you?

In Lubbock, energy choice means you have more plan options to choose from. We have a little something for everyone, so finding what you need is easy. Here are a few plan types you might encounter:

Fixed-rate plans

With a fixed-rate plan, you’ll pay the same rate every month for the duration of your contract.3 That means more predictable monthly bills and long-term price stability.

Renewable energy plans

Doing good for the planet can be as simple as choosing a renewable energy plan. These plans feature electricity attributable to renewable sources like wind and solar. Renewable energy plans and sustainable energy sources can help contribute to a cleaner and greener future for all.

Variable-rate plans

Are you craving more flexibility? With a variable-rate plan, the price you pay for electricity can go up or down from month to month. This plan type means you don’t have a long-term contract and can switch plans at any time without penalty.

Plans for renters

Renter-friendly electricity plans may offer a variety of term length options, fixed rates and same-day service. So whether you're renting an apartment, a condo or a house, you'll be able to find a plan that fits your unique needs.

Direct Energy and your utility work together to provide electricity service for your specific area. Direct Energy is a retail electricity provider, and you can shop for your own electricity plan with providers like us to find the right rate and plan for you. Your local utility is only responsible for delivering electricity to your home, reading your electricity meter, and maintaining the poles and wires that deliver electricity.

In the event of a power outage, contact your local utility company. Their contact information is typically found on your electricity bill.

Yes! In select markets, customers can choose renewable energy plans that utilize electricity attributable to environmentally friendly energy sources like wind or solar.

Opting for a renewable energy plan helps reduce carbon emissions and supports the development of sustainable energy sources, contributing to a cleaner and greener future.

No. Switching electricity providers won't interrupt your power. Lubbock Power & Light (LP&L) will continue to deliver electricity to your home and maintain the poles and wires. Direct Energy will handle your electricity plan and billing, so service stays on throughout the switch.

No action is needed. When you switch to Direct Energy, your electricity provider automatically transitions. LP&L will still be your local utility and continue maintaining the poles and wires that deliver electricity to your home.

If you're currently under contract with another provider, your plan may include an early termination fee. Any potential charges are outlined in your Electricity Facts Label.
